Reflections from Saturday, 12-30-2000, Eleven Years Later on Thursday, 12-30-2021: The Squirrel Saga (published 12-30-2021; article #286)

Introduction

I have a second cousin, the daughter of a first cousin, who lives in Georgia. (By the way, go Dawgs! I am still upset with the Georgia Bulldogs for being whipped by Alabama in the SEC Championship Game.) Apparently, my second cousin and her feller are having trouble with an invading squirrel. Atlanta is too far a drive for me to help them in a timely manner.

I caught wind about the invading squirrel. Hearing about their squirrel saga helped me today. Thanks, second cousin!

Eleven years ago today, on Saturday, 12/30/2000, the graveside service for my mother (Betty Lou Wood Ferrell, 11/24/1932-12/27/2000) was at 1 PM. The weather was cloudy and cold, with a brisk wind blowing from the northeast. The daytime high was only 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Frozen ground crunched as we walked on it. The crunching sound reminded me of walking on frozen snow in Russia. Members of the Fearghail clan and several family friends endured the weather during the graveside service.

After the service, at about 2 PM, gathered at the homeplace were my father, my brothers and their families, other family members, Mrs. Appalachian Irishman, and me. We were trying to warm up, eat a bite, and endure the day.

Today, Thursday, 12/30/2021

Today, Thursday, 12/30/2021, at about 2 PM, I remembered that cold Saturday from eleven years ago. I had already hauled off the trash. My wife had already returned from shopping at the grocery store. Afterward, she headed over to visit with her father, sister, and our niece. Their three cats and the “cat dog” were also there. My in-laws live about three miles away from us. My wife is still there as I am writing this article.

Today, the springlike weather on this winter day is a warm contrast to the frigid winter day from eleven years ago. Last evening, we even experienced a springtime thunderstorm.

The Squirrel

While I was “just sottin' here thinkin',” as I've said, I found out about the trouble that my second cousin in Georgia was having with an invading squirrel! My mind ran straight to the Ray Stevens song, which I have linked above.

The previous photograph may be the perpetrator! The squirrel looks like it is ready to jump inside, cousin!

Conclusion

Thanks, second cousin, for helping me get over my pensive state as I remembered the sadness from eleven years ago today. I needed to hear about your squirrel saga! I think that I'll get off here to call your mother, my first cousin, in a few minutes.

What do you know? Typing this line at 3:57 PM, the sun finally came out! Let's get outside and bask in the sunlight! Perhaps Molly (our old puppy) will want to play in the yard!

Are you, dear reader, ready for the Light to return? I am. I have been ready for a long time!

Later, I called my first 'cuz – the mother of my second 'cuz, who had been enduring her squirrel saga. We talked just over an hour and a half, on various topics. I'm glad that my first 'cuz is doing well enough. She has a sharp mind and a strong will, by which she continues to take on the various good and bad events in life.
